Marien de Jonge is Full Professor of Infection and Immunity and Head of the Laboratory of Medical Immunology at Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. He obtained a PhD from the University of Amsterdam in 2003, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, where he worked until 2006. He then transitioned to industry, taking on the role of R&D Project Leader at Merck Sharp & Dohme.

In 2011, he returned to academia, joining Radboud University Medical Center as a senior scientist. In 2012, he was appointed Assistant Professor and Head of the Laboratory of Pediatric Infectious Diseases. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2018 and, in 2021, became Head of the Laboratory of Medical Immunology. In 2023, he was appointed Full Professor.

The Laboratory of Medical Immunology provides clinical diagnostic services for immunological disorders and conducts cutting-edge research to advance their prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Professor de Jonge has an extensive track record in vaccine development and host–microbe interaction research. His work focuses on the mucosal immune system, particularly the mechanisms underlying respiratory tract infections. His group also investigates innovative intranasal and intradermal vaccination strategies and seeks to identify immune correlates of protection. In addition, the group develops novel diagnostic approaches for immunological disorders, bridging fundamental immunological research and clinical application.

Abstract: « Closing the gap in protection against pneumococcal infection and disease, a combined mucosal and systemic vaccination approach »
